Skunks (6623)
While striped skunks have earned a negative reputation primarily because of the repugnant odor of their musk, these nocturnal creatures are actually quite peaceful and provide good insect and rodent control.
We humans may find skunks annoying because they often set up their dens under our dwellings or dig in our carefully tended lawns for insects. However, skunks are actually highly beneficial to farmers, gardeners, and landowners because they feed on large numbers of agricultural and garden pests, including grasshoppers, white grubs, beetles, mice, rats, and other small mammals.
Skunks can carry rabies, so care is needed when encountering this creature. How does one deal with skunks that have become pests? In Pennsylvania, skunks are considered fur bearers, so a hunting license is required before trapping them, unless they are causing damage to property. If you are having trouble with skunks, a local wildlife pest control operator may be of assistance.
There are no registered repellents for skunks. You' can, however, keep skunks from building dens under your buildings or porches by sealing off all foundation openings. Prevent skunks from denning under buildings by covering openings with wire mesh, sheet metal, or concrete. Bury fencing at least 1½ feet deep. You need to be absolutely sure you do not fence or barricade a living skunk in an area. If you are not sure the skunk has left, call a pest control operator for help. Properly dispose of garbage, using tight-fitting lids to keep skunks out of garbage cans. Remove any debris or old lumber in your area. Using an appropriate insecticide for grubs will deter skunks from digging up the lawn.
What can you do if you are sprayed with skunk musk? Washing people, pets, or clothing with vinegar or tomato juice may eliminate much of the odor. If musk enters the eyes, temporary blindness of 10-15 minutes may result. Rinse the eyes with copious amounts of water to speed recovery.
Recently individuals have found a new solution to be effective for removing the odor. The recipe for skunk odor removal solution is 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda, and 1 teaspoon liquid soap. Mix together and apply. Do not store or put this solution in a closed container, as it produces a gas and can rupture the container.
