Attracting Wildlife - Birds (6603)
Attracting songbirds to your backyard is a popular and convenient way to observe them up close. To attract birds year-round, provide them with food, water, and cover. Cover includes shelter from harsh weather and enemies as well as a place to build a nest and raise young.
When feeding birds, remember that some are seed-eaters, others eat fruit, some eat insects, some eat animals, and hummingbirds feed on flower nectar. Suet is usually made from hard beef fat and is preferred by insect-eaters like woodpeckers. The right kinds of seeds attract many seed-eaters, and a sugar water solution attracts hummingbirds.
Many types of feeders are available commercially, or you can make them at home. Commercial seed combinations are also available; however, you may choose to purchase preferred seeds and mix your own.
Bird baths provide drinking water and help keep parasites down. Many fine bird baths are available commercially, but substitutes can be made from various household items. Bird baths need a roughened bottom and should be no deeper than 2 to 3 inches.
A well-built bird house that is durable, rain-proof, cool, and easy to clean can add to the attractiveness of your backyard. Plants are also important in your backyard habitat. They provide shelter, nesting sites, and foods such as fruit. A variety of plants generally attracts more wildlife as it offers a greater choice of food and cover.
