Preventing behavior problems (1098)
As a parent, you can use several tools to prevent a behavior problem from happening in the first place. Here are seven simple ideas for you to try:
1. Try changing your thinking about your child's behavior. Think about the behavior and ability typical for children in your child's age group. Perhaps you are expecting behavior that is beyond your child's current development.
2. Try to demonstrate the behavior you expect. Show your children what you would like them to do. A simple demonstration of how to do things will often head off problems.
3. Give your child specific instructions. Children don't always know the rules or what you want them to do.
4. Catch your child being good. Let your child know immediately when he or she has done something good. Give your child affection and encouragement.
5. Show an interest in what your children do. Ask them to talk about what they are doing. Children respond to adults who show a genuine interest in them.
6. Provide real affection by expressing unconditional positive feelings for your children. Give lots of hugs and tell them you think they are special.
7. Enjoy your child's company. Become a partner in your child's activities and participate in play-time.
