Mustard Stains (1413)
Mustard contains turmeric, a yellow dye. If not treated immediately, stains can be impossible to remove. Treat stains as soon as possible after staining. Scrape off excess with a dull knife. If the stain has just occurred, spray fabric spot cleaner such as "Spray n’ Wash®" or "Shout®" on it.
Hot water and detergent can set mustard stains, so pre-treat them before washing. If the garment is washable, sponge the stain with vinegar solution of 1 quart warm water, ½ tsp. liquid hand-washing detergent and 1 TBSP. vinegar. Flush with water. Before using solution, test on garment to be sure it is colorfast on an inside seam allowance or hem. Let air-dry. If using a powdered detergent, sponge with water. Apply a paste of powdered detergent and water, then launder as usual. If using a liquid detergent, apply liquid directly to the dry fabric. Launder as usual. If the stain remains, bleach with oxygen-type bleach, then launder. If stain still remains, soak in a warm water and enzyme pre-soak for 30 minutes.
Sponging means to place stained side down over absorbent material (white paper towel, white lint-free cloth). Then using another piece of folded white lint-free cloth, lightly brush stained area, working from the outside of the stain to the center. Avoid circular motions to prevent rings.
